What Is Mega Men?
Mega Men is a multivitamin, dietary supplement, made by the manufacturer GNC. The vitamin is meant to provide a large number of vitamins into your diet, and is generally taken by those with a high workout schedule. These vitamins include things like Vitamins A, C, D, E, and K, as well as Biotin, Calcium, and a plethora of other beneficial vitamins. Mega Men is designed to provide a boost of energy, and has been described as “a good starter pill” in the bodybuilding community. GNC states it is clinically proven to improve a key marker, crucial for peak performance, stamina and lean muscle. The pill itself is a gluten free, dairy free, and yeast free capsule, said to be designed to be easier to swallow.
Born, essentially, in Pittsburgh, by one David Shakarian, GNC came to be in 1935. Originally known as “Lackzoom”, the company did not gain its name “GNC” until 1960. GNC is now the world’s largest health retailer, with over 8,000 stores in more than 50 countries across the globe. The company is a leading global specialty retailer of health and wellness products. These include vitamins, supplements, dietary aids, herbs, sports nutrition and energy boosters. One can easily find a large variety of bodybuilding, nutritional supplements, vitamins and natural remedies with this manufacturer.
GNC’s wide product mix, which is focused on premium, value-added nutritional products, is sold under GNC proprietary brands. The company also trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol “GNC”. The company has been thriving and providing the public with these products since 1935, and is now celebrating their 91st year of providing the bodybuilding community with a high volume of muscle promoting, energy boosting, supplements.
How Mega Men Works?
The multivitamin from GNC is meant to be used as a supplement. It is taken twice daily in the form of a pill, and is said to provide the body with energy, and a plethora of vitamins to supplement of high workout routine, such as bodybuilding. This multivitamin cast is provided in several forms, and each have a different additional affect on the body. Mega Men® Multivitamin, for instance, provides 100% of all vitamin intakes that it provides on its label, provided you take the recommended dose of two pills per day. It is said, by the manufacturer, to enhance performance and give energy.
Designed specifically for active men, and their health, the specific formula of Mega Men promotes active lifestyles by boosting energy, and providing digestive support and antioxidant support. Males require specific essential amino acids for muscle health and strength. Amino acids, themselves are known as the building blocks of muscle growth. GNC provides this in the form of L-arginine and BCAA, or branched chain amino acids, which is known to help decrease the recovery time between workouts, another reason why this vitamin can be an excellent choice for someone with a bodybuilding routine.
Ingredients of Mega Men
Unlike most other multivitamin pills, GNC has provided an added group of fruit and vegetables via a specific blend added into their pills. The blend itself provides an added source of such things as calcium, protein, and vitamins. All of which promote not just the build of muscle, but energy, and health in general. By adding such things as Carrot, Papaya, Orange, Pineapple, and even Pumpkin(including a plethora of other natural blended ingredients), this particular brand has a leg up on most of the other competitor brands of multivitamin.
Alongside the mix of fruits and vegetables, this particular one contains a full round of Amino Acids, including Taurine, and L-Carnitine. Amino Acids promoted healing, and provide energy as well as decreasing the healing process between workouts, making it possible to remain active. One of the least mentioned ingredients within this multivitamin, and some others as well, is the addition of Fish and Soybeans. Both of these items provide the body with an essential nutrient that the body is not capable of producing on its own, Omega-3.
Omega-3 has several benefits to the body, including slowing the build up of atherosclerotic, and acts as an anti-inflammatory. With higher levels of Omega-3 in the system of an active individual, it will work to counteract our bodies natural abundance of Omega-6, which is known to cause inflammation. This inflammation may counteract some of exercises positive effects, and can drastically impact muscle soreness, and tissue repair, causing the recovery time to lengthen after a workout. This makes the Omega-3 found in the soybean and fish addition important.
The use of Stevia Leaf Extract provides a less unpleasant experience while taking the pill itself, without impacting its health benefits. The Stevia plant itself is a non-carbohydrate, and near zero-calorie addition to this pill, and is found to be nearly 200 times sweeter than sugar, without the side effects sugar can have on the body. Unlike sugar, Stevia extract provides even more vitamins to the pill itself, which sugar would, in fact, take away from the supplement. This coupled with the Natural Vanilla Mint Flavor, has made the pill itself an easier to swallow option.
GNC’s multivitamin includes 50mg of the B-vitamin complex. This complex promotes muscle tone (in both the abdomen and intestine). GNC also produces this pill without adding any other unnecessary ingredients. This means that the multivitamin is safe for anyone allergic to dairy, gluten, or wheat. It also does not include any artificial flavors. A consumer taking this vitamin will be introducing nearly 100% of all needed vitamins on a daily dose. This promotes higher energy, and is prime for a bodybuilding lifestyle.
With a high vitamin B complex, this multivitamin promotes a high energy production. Also, aside from the usual vitamin mix within most multivitamins one can buy on the market in general, Mega Men provides a mix of fruits and vegetables, which provide a vitamin rich product that, all in all, provides nearly all of a bodybuilders daily vitamin intake.
GNC brands are NSF-certified. NSF is the leading dietary supplement certification program accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Standards Council of Canada (SCC).As well, GNC labels supplement bottles when they have undergone the testing through LGC, making the bottles marked with the insignia certified through LGC as Banned Substance Free. The tested bottles will bear either “Banned Substance Free” or the label “Informed Choice”.
The Mega Men vitamins are white, while the Mega Men Sport are brown. There doesn’t seem to be much difference between the two vitamins, but the Sport are supposedly formulated to provide for energy. Aside from maybe an herbal taste, a little bad breath, and a foul milky smell to the vitamins that my fiancé absolutely can’t tolerate, I haven’t experienced any adverse physical side affects from taking the Mega Men vitamins. – J. Caffarella, NY
I know it’s not only one of its type but I recommend it as I’ve gone through dozens of bottle and they’re as good as they were when i started them. When you order pay attention to expire date. That’s my only critique. – Lillys D., LA
I have a hectic work and long work week and this is the one vitamin that actually makes a difference. I’ve tried to switch to the Costco brand premium multi-vitamin for men but it just doesn’t provide the pick-me up that these do. I highly recommend them. – David J. Chamberlin, NJ
This is the perfect vitamin. I’ve been taking this for years now and it makes me feel great! I work out regularly so I always buy the “Sport”. Does not make me jittery but gives me a healthy amount of added energy. I’ve had one cold in 4 years, and I don’t eat super healthy. I credit the vitamins for that. – Kate Taylor, WA
I’ve been using this vitamin on and off for about 4 years now. I take it 1.5 – 2 hours prior to workout with a little extra water. My workout is a mix of cardio and weight lifting. I feel like it gives me a little extra energy boost without taking some sort of pre-workout powder. – K. Lemoine, AK
I have taken this product for 10 years and find it to be very effective. I am 65, exercise vigorously 4-5 times per week, but do not always eat a healthy diet. Mega Men is a supplement staple for me and I recommend it for those men over 50 years of age. – Chris T., FL
Based on my personal experience, I would say it was a fair value. It was a good starter multivitamin and by taking this I had an idea what to expect from other multivitamins. The pill size may be intimidating for some, practice with other larger supplement pills or cut the pill in half then consume. Don?t let the pill sit to long in your mouth with the liquid, as with any pill the taste can be displeasing. – Joseph L., DE
Awards & Media Coverage
GNC’s Mega Men® vitamins were featured on Fox News Health, published October 10th in 2013. This particular article highlighted some key points both on the upside of taking this pill, and on the downside. In another article GNC refutes the claims of one New York State Attorney General, whom claimed that there were problems with the pill, and in how the company handled them prior to, and after, distribution. In this feature GNC is stated to have provided test, and retesting, results in order to prove the purity of their pills.
As well one Dr. Davis, Director of Regulatory Affairs for Regulatory Compliance Associates, states:
In my expert opinion, the allegations in the NY AG Letter regarding the results of DNA-based testing are not the product of reliable scientific principles and methods and therefore do not form a reliable basis for allegations of adulteration, mislabeling, or contamination of the GNC products identified in the NY AG Letter.
All six formulas produced by GNC holdings were tested by ConsumerLab. All six were awarded for passing this testing, which included testing selected index elements, their ability ti disintegrate in solution, lead contamination threshold, and meeting FDA labeling requirements.
In 2003 GNC and NSF International, unveiled a first-of-its-kind collaborative agreement in the field of Nutritional Supplements, wherein GNC agreed to run their supplements through the rigorous testing, and stringent protocols, NSF requires. This made GNC the first national retailer to have its entire company line tested by, and accepted by, only American National Standard for dietary supplements, NSF.
